We flew into Longbeach a day early for a cruise we did the snooze-n-cruise there. Their free shuttle came to the airport picked us up ( a little inconvenient we had to wait about an hour) but hey the shuttle was FREE. Next day they took us to the port, the shuttle couldn't leave until 1:00pm so they let us hang out in our room until we left. When our 2-week cruise was over they came and got us at the port then drove us to longbeach airport, nice huh, did I mention the shuttle was FREE. Rooms were dated but clean, staff was very friendly & accommodating. Only complaint (there's always one isn't there :) ) Hotel is on a very busy road so it was a little noisey. So if you can handle a little noise and having to make arrangements for the shuttle and be willing to wait a little then it's well worth the money.
We went to Long Beach to watch a rowing competition, and were looking for a reasonably priced hotel near the Long Beach Marine Stadium. Originally I wanted to stay at Best Western, which had high ratings, but they only had non-smoking rooms with king-sized beds. As we were thinking of taking our youngest son with us, we wanted a 2-bed room. Hotel Current was offering a very good rate via Kayak, and I decided to take a chance. It was a good decision - our son went with us, and it was a great experience for all of us.
The hotel was less than 2 miles from the marina, and had we not had to be there before 7:30 on a very cold Sunday morning, it would have been a very pleasant walk. The hotel itself looks like a motel, though there are other hotels taking advantage of the great California weather to dispense with the walled hallways. The property looks very well maintained, with beautiful blue roofs, and grayish white stucco. The lobby is cozy, but nicely renovated, with an updated, very modern, look to it, and is done as an "open concept", as in one large open space. In one corner is the "business center", with the computer, printer and a phone (I think there is a charge to use any of those, but since most everyone travels with their own computers, this is hardly a problem).
The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. While I had a difficulty with my Kayak booking (they seem to have forgotten to forward my reservation to the hotel), the young lady at the reception was very patient and understanding, and once I had the Kayak rep on the phone, she had interrupted her conversation with the other customers to finish figuring out my issue with the Kayak guy. They went above and beyond in helping us with some other requests during our stay.
With our keys in hand, we went into the room. The motel-like structure had rows of plain room doors facing to the outdoors, along with the large windows. We were not sure what to expect behind these doors, but once inside, we were truly impressed by the understated, modern decor. The room itself was large, bigger than I would have expected. It was tastefully furnished with dark-veneered desk/dresser/fridge cabinet, which seems at least 8 feet long (lots of counter space). The flat-screen TV, mounted on the wall, had HBO, and we did not get around to checking other channels.
We did a requisite check for bed bugs (my wife is more vigilant about this than I am), and thankfully found no sign of them in either bed. The bedding was clean, as was the rest of the room. The only reason I am rating this hotel a 4, rather than a 5 is that the beds are rather hard. I must admit, though, that after a packed day of activities, I had absolutely no trouble falling asleep on this bed.
At the back of the room there is a sliding barn-style door (dark veneer with aluminum accents). When you slide it open, it opens up to the very spacious bathroom - a nice, modern raised sink with a waterfall faucet, Against the other wall there is a wardrobe to hang clothes in, a cupboard with a safe, and below it a bottle of Fiji water (with a $4 price tag). The fridge was unencumbered by the mini-bar items, and we could use it to store our own food. Then there is another "barn" door, which separates the toilet and the shower from the rest of the bathroom. The shower is large, bigger than a typical bathtub (though at some point it may have been preceded by one), with the rainfall showerhead mounted on the ceiling. There is no cramped feeling, one may expect at a cheap hotel.
Other than the hard-ish bed, the only other gripe I have is that the music in the lobby was playing quite loud, making it difficult to talk on the phone, while trying to square away my Kayak situation. Going outside did not help much either - there were speakers by both front and back door, blaring the spirit of the season music, even louder than inside.
All in all, it was an excellent stay. To make it even better, the hotel provides free breakfast, which was not mentioned on Kayak (nor did I see it in the reviews here). I have also learned a lesson - when making reservation through an on-line service, confirm it with the hotel before traveling.
The room has a good number of electrical outlets - 3 doubles in the room and one more in the bathroom, one of them above the desk. The hotel has free wireless internet.
The hotel was set out more like a motel, but did not give that impression in any other way. The newly renovated rooms were lovely, stylish and clean. The pool area was also very nice, quiet and peaceful, a great place to get a tan!! The hotel staff were helpful and welcoming. The one downside was the area. The surrounds of the hotel did not feel overally safe, especially in the late evening/night.
I had booked 19 rooms for my parents and girls prior to our competition. We were very surprised with this hotel. The personnel from the time I contacted them to the time we checked out were very nice, professional and friendly. The rooms were excellent and clean. the beds were most comfortable and the rooms modern. Plenty of hot water. I would highly recommend this hotel.
The bamboo garden in the entry way driving in is appealing to the eye... but beyond that the outer of the hotel is leaving much to be desired... I was very much blessed walking into my room finding a very peaceful, clean and aesthetic atmosphere! All weight just fell off my shoulders. I was very amazed for the price of my room... I have not been in another hotel for this cost where the room was this amazing!! Totally worth the stay. I would encourage anyone to stay at this hotel. I enjoyed my stay and left refreshed!
